Honoured as the cornerstone of Christian music, Smith has sold more than 15 million albums and received more than 44 Dove awards over the course of a 30-year career. In addition, Smith has three GRAMMY Awards under his belt, and was awarded a “Golden Note” by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) for his lifetime achievement in song writing.
In 1983, Smith released his debut album, ‘The Michael W. Smith Project,’ which contained the first recording of his greatest hit, “Friends.” He then went on to release more albums combining mainstream style with a touch of religious feel. Till date, the veteran singer has sold more than 15 million albums, recorded 32 No. 1 songs, received 2x RIAA Multi Platinum, six Platinum and 16 Gold certifications.
Smith released Sovereign last year, his first worship album with his new record label. Enlisting the talents of several young songwriters and producers that he hadn’t collaborated with previously, the album is fun and refreshing yet still upholding true Michael W. Smith essence.
Setting the benchmark for the album is the potent anthem “Miracle” which gave rise to “You Won’t Let Go,” the first single from Sovereign. Like his other hit songs, “You Won’t Let Go” has quickly become a staple in his shows. The song’s powerful lyric resonates with believers, giving Smith a triumphant re-entry into Christian radio where the song is being enthusiastically embraced. Pushing himself creatively, Smith creates a sense of musical adventure which permeates the songs on Sovereign by crafting a vibrant collection of songs with a fresh sense of musical innovation.
